The Project

The Lantern began with a simple idea: that even a home away from home should feel familiar.

Purchased as an investment by a client living overseas, this newly completed apartment at TRX Residences in Kuala Lumpur had to do more than make efficient use of a compact footprint. The brief was ambitious — to bring together the ease of a hotel, the comfort of a home and a sense of quality that felt appropriate to its city-centre setting.

With living and dining sharing one space, every decision carried weight. The challenge was not simply fitting everything in, but knowing what deserved to take up space. Furniture, built-ins, finishes and lighting were selected and positioned to create distinction between the different functions while allowing the apartment to retain a sense of openness.

Neutral tones form the foundation, allowing texture and form to do the work. At the centre of it all, a sculptural pendant hangs between the living and dining areas. In a space where there was little room for unnecessary gestures, it became one of the few elements that could speak loudly — casting a warm glow across both spaces and giving the apartment its name.

The result is an interior that feels polished enough for a city stay, but never anonymous. A place with the familiarity of somewhere you know, even when it isn’t quite home.

Mod Maison handled the interior design, space planning, custom built-ins, furnishing and project coordination through to completion.
